Eating Disorders Q&A

What are eating disorders?

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions involving disordered eating habits, food preoccupation, and body image concerns. They go far beyond normal dieting and can severely impact your physical health, emotions, and everyday life.

Eating disorders can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background.

What are the different types of eating disorders?

Each type of eating disorder has distinct behaviors and risks. They include:

Anorexia nervosa

This eating disorder involves extreme food restriction, an intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted body image. You can become dangerously underweight but still see yourself as overweight.

Bulimia nervosa

Bulimia involves repeated episodes of binge eating followed by purging behaviors like vomiting or over-exercising. You can appear healthy but often battle shame, guilt, and loss of control.

Binge eating disorder (BED)

BED involves regularly devouring large amounts of food, often without hunger, followed by guilt or distress. Unlike bulimia, it doesn’t involve purging behaviors.

Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)

ARFID involves limiting food intake due to sensory sensitivities, fear of choking, or lack of interest in food — not body image concerns.

Diabulimia

Diabulimia involves individuals with type 1 diabetes intentionally skipping or reducing insulin doses to try to lose weight.

Other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED)

OSFED involves disordered eating symptoms that don’t fully match other diagnoses but still cause serious distress.

What causes eating disorders?

The causes of eating disorders are complex and vary from person to person. Factors may include:

  • Genetics: a family history of eating disorders or mental health conditions
  • Psychological factors: Low self-esteem, perfectionism, anxiety, or trauma
  • Cultural and social influences: societal pressure to be thin, social media, and diet culture
  • Biological factors: hormonal imbalances or brain chemistry

These influences often overlap, creating a unique set of challenges and reinforcing the importance of personalized care and support in recovery.

How are eating disorders treated?

The team at Mental Health Counseling and Wellness Center provides effective treatment by combining therapy, medical care, and nutritional counseling tailored to your needs. Therapy addresses emotional patterns, while medical monitoring ensures physical health.

They also support healthy eating habits and may recommend medication to help with anxiety or depression. With early intervention and support, recovery is achievable and life-changing.
